Introducing Cannabis Edibles

by | Jan 16, 2020 | Edibles

The wait is finally over, cannabis edibles are now available to be purchased in dispensaries all across Canada!

Edibles are an extremely effective way of consuming cannabis as you eat them rather than smoking, although it may take some time before you feel the effects. Depending on the type of edible, dosage taken and the tolerance of the person who consumes it, it can take up to 30 – 120 minutes before the first effects kick in. The consumption of THC via digestive system varies from person to person and the effects can last up to an full eight hours. It is important to be cautious when taking edibles as you might not feel the effects right away, then may take more leading to uncomfortable effects.

Now, you may be asking why would i choose to take edibles over smoking cannabis?

Some people prefer to have their goods infused with cannabis to avoid the smell of cannabis smoke. Others may consume edibles so that they can consume their cannabis indoors. Edibles are also more discreet than burning and inhaling cannabis.

The Science Behind Edibles

Ingesting cannabis through the form of edibles prolongs the medicinal effects of cannabis. This is great for those suffering from medical conditions that are chronic such as pain, insomnia, anxiety, or depression.

Edibles also bypass the respiratory system entirely. This is helpful for those who want to use medical cannabis but suffer from respiratory issues and find it difficult to inhale cannabis while smoking.

How Much Should I Take?

The standard dose of edibles is 10 mg, although it is recommended for first time users or users with a low tolerance to start out with half of that. Several factors are involved in terms of a person’s response to the amount of mg consumed including previous history of cannabis use, gastrointestinal factors, and the function of one’s endocannabinoid system.

If you feel like you have taken too much, don’t panic! As a cannabis overdose is not fatal, but more so uncomfortable and slightly disorienting. Remember to start out with a low dosage and take it easy!
